Lights - Journey

This song from 1978 didn't chart very high initially, only reaching #68. Over the years though, fans have realized it is actually a very good song, and rate it higher. Steve Perry wrote this long before joining Journey, however, he wrote it about Los Angeles! It didn't have the oomph factor he wanted, so he tabled it. When he joined Journey, he realized that 'the lights shine on the bay' were ever so much better than 'the lights shine on L.A.', and changed the bridge. Of course the song took off, having that oomph factor missing in the beginning. This was one of the songs with Steve as well, when listening to audition tapes, the manager for the group hired him after hearing only 15 seconds of Steve's tape. Hailing from the 'Infinity' album, this was the last album featuring drummer Aynsley Dunbar, who was kicked out for 'incompatibility' with the rest of the band. Steve Smith was his replacement, and I don't know as the fans even noticed the lineup change.

Enjoy!
