Stay With Me - Lorraine Ellison

Quick, how many soul songs came about as a direct result of Frank Sinatra cancelling a studio session due to illness? This 1966 soul classic charted at #11 on the R&B charts, #64 on the Billboard Hot 100. When a 46 piece orchestra found themselves at loose ends, songwriters Jerry Raganovy and George David Weiss were given only two days notice to rework it. They called in Lorraine Ellison, who had such a powerful set of vocals, it is a wonder she wasn't better known as a soul singer. Bette Midler was among the many artists who covered this song, for her role as Janis Joplin in 'The Rose'. Lagniappe: This song was featured in the movie Pirate Radio (aka The Ship That Rocked), but the scene it was used in was cut. Sadly, Lorraine Ellison died of ovarian cancer in 1985.
