It was the 3rd of June

Jim reminded me of what today was, so I'm offering an alternate song o' the day:
Ode To Billy Joe - Bobbie Gentry
If you're not certain what chopping cotton means, it means to hoe weeds among the young cotton plants - cottons bolls aren't ready to be picked till late Autumn. Back then, folk were considered 'not right' when there was a mental disorder suspected; today we can treat for most of them, though the exact science of treatment is still hit or miss. (I've a cousin remanded permanently to Chattahoochee.) I consider music along these lines to be a type of public service announcement - help is available, if we can keep the programs for them going.

Bobbie Gentry is an interesting pioneer. One of the first female country singers to write, produce and perform all her own material. From the Mississippi delta to southern California to study philosophy. Sharp lady.

I believe this song was based on actual events, but Bobbie Gentry won't disclose anything about them. And yes, she is a very smart lady.

I think she said it was based on an actual suicide, but that she didn't know details of the story.
