Take Five - The Dave Brubeck Quartet

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Don't you just love it when someone breaks all the unwritten rules on any subject and proves all the naysayers wrong? This song does exactly that. First off, it is written in 5/4 time, a simple quintuple meter, where each beat is divided in half. Second, it isn't used very often, much less so in jazz pieces. Third, this particular song was included in an album composed of all original songs, supposedly something you don't do with jazz albums. Take Five jumped from the Jazz charts to the Pop charts, reaching #25 in the US, and #6 in the UK in 1959, a rarity, I can assure you. A funky piece, not to everyone's liking, but one that could be said to influence a few recent songs: 'Here Come The Bastards' by Primus, 'Living In The Past' by Jethro Tull, 'Seven Days' by Sting, and a host more. Other hits are partially in 5/4 time, most notably 'Mother' by Pink Floyd, from the great album 'The Wall'. So you see, it does pays to take a giant step out from the crowd, to do your own thing.

Enjoy!

When you create your topic, you will notice a row of buttons just above the text box. Towards the right end of that row is a film strip looking button (if you hover above it, it will say "video"). Click that button, add the copied url to the video you wish to post and click "ok." That's it.

Mrs. C,

I created a spotify station with this song and I'm loving where it's taking me, probably my favorite station right now. Thanks again!
