My Sharona - The Knack
Every time I hear this song, I think of the parody 'Nine Coronas'!
Okay, there truly was a Sharona, she was 8 years younger than lead singer Doug Fieger, and both were in relationships with others when Fieger walked into the clothing store where Sharona was working. Instantly smitten with her, he invited her to the next concert, right in front of his current GF! Fiegel hurriedly dumped his GF, and when Sharona and HER boyfriend would attend concerts together, he'd hit on her. He wrote My Sharona before they even got together; released in 1979, it reached #1 on the US chart, #6 on the UK chart. At long last, Sharona was single, and she began dating Fieger. They were together for four years, and at one point, were even engaged, when Sharona tired of the rock and roll lifestyle and Fieger's drinking, and broke up with him. When asked about the breakup, she'd answer simply that she needed to become her own Sharona again, not someone else's. After a bit of time, they became friends, and during the last week of Fieger's life, as he was dying of cancer, she was by his side. Fieger passed away 14 February, 2010.
