Tuesday's song Empty Tuesday's song

Post by CuylerLady Tue May 28, 2013 9:51 am

I'm breaking with tradition, and posting a speech today, in lieu of a song. This is a speech that will resonate till the end of time, by a man who is known the world over as the Little Tramp - Charlie Chaplin.

This is the ending of Chaplin's 1940 film, The Great Dictator, his first 'talkie'. This film is clearly a jab at Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and fascism, antisemitism, and Nazism. At the time of the film's release, America was still in a formal peace with Germany, though there was a rising awareness of what was going on, leading to more and more folk condemning Hitler's actions. Eerily enough, Chaplin's speech would, in part, be echoed by Anne Frank in her diary, when she wrote: "...Because in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.” In 1964, Chaplin wrote in his autobiography had he known the true horrors of the concentration camps, he never would have made the film.

A rousing, moving, thought-provoking speech, one that isn't be forgotten.

Enjoy.

Brilliant.

Unrelated side note - I once had a waitress at a Gainesville restaurant I frequented named Oona.
