Don't Try So Hard - Queen
Although Freddie Mercury wrote this song, per an agreement from years past, credit was shared among all the members of Queen. This is one of Freddie's final recordings, as told by his voice, a thin and reedy for most of the song, letting you glimpse how much of a toll AIDS took on him; then in certain spots a huge burst of energy, the old Freddie everyone knew and loved coming through. Additionally, you can hear echoes of early Queen songs in the instrumental parts. In essence, Freddie is saying be yourself, don't worry about what others think, especially in the end, when all is for naught. Lagniappe: The tones heard at the very beginning of the song are the preset sounds of a Korg M1 keyboard, audible each time it is turned on. This series of notes is one octave higher than the E A D G B E tuning of a six string guitar in Italian tuning.
